RHD

Mitsubishi Delicas, RVRs, Pajero Minis; Mazda Bongos; Toyota Granvias - there are a lot of not-too-familiar car models on Manila roads nowadays.

Filipinos have really jumped on the imports trend. These cars are Japanese second-hand units brought in by traders.

Because they are right-hand drive cars, they have to be modified to be considered street-legal here in the Philippines. I asked a friend of mine, who supervises conversion of these vehicles on a large-scale basis, about their reliability. According to him, there is nothing to worry about since, during the modification process, they "make no shortcuts" - whatever that means.

Sit This Way

November 22, 2007
5:26 PM

Passenger jeepneys in the Philippines have seating configurations wherein riders sit facing each other.

It's annoying when people on a jeepney insist on sitting diagonally such that other passengers can't sit comfortably anymore.

Often guilty of this are women who want to sit facing the window because they don't want their hairdos ruined as the jeepney speeds along.

MP3thics

The lady sitting behind me on the shuttle van on my way home is listening to some loud music on her mobile phone's MP3 player --- without headphones.

Technology is wonderful. Too bad that it can be annoying also.

I can't wait to get home.

I remember a few days ago, some guy sitting behind me (how lucky can I get?) was soundtripping on his MP3 player, but with headphones this time. He was singing along loudly, though. And, as if that wasn't bad enough, he only knew the trailing end of the lyrics so that there were some moments of silence and then he would suddenly sing out loud in an irritating falsetto. This went on for the whole duration of the trip.

Fashion Glitch?

Women nowadays wear short blouses with low necklines.

When they get on or off public transport such as jeepneys, they pull up the collar to hide their cleavage and, at the same time, pull down the back so their behind won't show.

I don't get it.

'Got Screwed

On the tricycle this morning, a screw poked out from the backrest of the seat and hurt my back. As I was getting off and paying the driver, I mentioned it to him. I'm sure he heard me since I spoke loudly because I got really irritated. The man totally ignored me and acted like he didn't even care.

The incident made me both angry and a bit pitiful for him.

I take public transport to work daily. Work for me is in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, about 30 or so kilometers south of Manila, which requires me to take four separate rides - two tricycles & two jeepneys.

The jeepney I'm on this morning is shaking and shuddering violently when it's fully stopped.

I'm trying to read some SMS on my mobile phone and it's making me really dizzy. I feel like throwing up ...
